A Beginner’s Guide to Decorating Your Front Porch with Plants

If you’re new to porch decorating, start simple with front porch planter boxes! Planter boxes are an easy, low-maintenance way to add instant charm to your home’s entrance. Not only do they create a welcoming vibe, but they also give you a chance to play around with color and texture. I recently made a stop at my local Lowe’s Home Improvement, which offers a wide range of durable and stylish planter boxes that can fit any porch size and design. I found some similar ones on Amazon that you can check out as well.

For beginners, choosing the right plants is key. Start with chrysanthemums (commonly known as “mums”) and crotons. Mums are a popular fall flower, available in vibrant colors like yellow, red, and purple. They’re resilient, easy to care for, and—best of all—mums naturally repel insects! The scent of their blooms keeps pests like ants, mosquitoes, and ticks away, making them a functional and beautiful option.

Pair your mums with crotons to create a dynamic look. Crotons are known for their striking leaves with hues of green, orange, and red, adding a bold contrast to the delicate mum blossoms. They thrive in similar conditions, making maintenance a breeze.

To get started, place two matching planter boxes on either side of your door. Add a few mums in the center for a pop of color, then frame them with crotons for visual interest. This setup will instantly elevate your porch’s appeal without overwhelming you.

Pro-Tip: make sure you create holes at the bottom of the planter boxes. Mine didnt have holes, but it had indicators of where holes should be created. I got a knife and worked my magic. Just be careful when doing this.

By using easy-care plants and versatile planter boxes, you can have a gorgeous front porch in no time—perfect for welcoming guests or just enjoying your outdoor space!

Here are some flicks of how mine turned out. I’m obsessed! Follow along on how I did it on IG and TikTok.
