Growing an Avocado Tree from a Seed

Have you ever wondered what to do with that leftover avocado pit after enjoying your favorite guacamole or avocado toast? Instead of tossing it, why not grow your very own avocado tree? Growing an avocado tree from a seed is a simple and rewarding project. Today I’ll show you how to sprout an avocado seed using the paper towel and Ziploc bag method—an easy and space-saving technique.

What You’ll Need

  • One avocado seed

  • Damp paper towel

  • Resealable Ziploc bag

  • Warm, dark place

  • Optional: Marker for labeling

Step-by-Step Instructions

1. Clean the Seed

After enjoying your avocado, remove the seed and rinse it under lukewarm water to remove any fruit residue. Be gentle and remove the brown film on the seed. Be sure to avoid damaging the seed.

2. Wrap in a Damp Paper Towel

Take a clean paper towel, dampen it with water (not too wet), and wrap the seed completely. Ensure it’s moist enough to provide hydration but not soggy.

3. Place in a Ziploc Bag

Put the wrapped seed inside a Ziploc bag and seal it to create a dark and humid environment (I recommend the kitchen cabinet). You can label the bag with the date to track progress.

4. Store in a Warm Spot

Place the bag in a warm location, such as on top of the refrigerator or near a windowsill. Avoid direct sunlight, which may dry out the paper towel. Check every few days to ensure the paper towel remains damp.

5. Watch for Sprouting

Within 2 to 6 weeks, the seed should split open. A small root will emerge from the bottom, followed by a sprout from the top. When the root reaches 3 inches, it’s time to plant.

Planting Your Seed

  1. Select a Pot: Use a small pot with drainage holes.

  2. Prepare the Soil: Fill with well-draining potting mix.

  3. Plant the Seed: Place the seed in the soil, leaving the top half exposed.

  4. Water and Care: Keep the soil moist and place the pot in a sunny spot.

Tips for Success

  • Be Patient: Germination takes time, so don’t rush the process.

  • Monitor Moisture: Check regularly to ensure the paper towel stays damp.

  • Repot When Needed: Transfer the tree to a larger pot as it grows.

Growing an avocado tree using the paper towel and Ziploc bag method is an easy, eco-friendly way to bring nature into your home. It’s a great project for anyone looking to add a touch of greenery to their space. Save that avocado pit and give it a try!
